No title. Just an outline.
The ship slowley felt its way into orbit, since each world was slightly different and it was also possible that some tiny moonlet went undetected. That could be a real navigational hazard and a darn bad day.
The soldiers were already marching into the dropcones, around two hundred in each plus a small crew. They were buckling into the two main cones while another crew was ready to enter another in case of emergency.
The two cones disconnected from the mother ship and eased their way out of orbit. The two cones would be dozens of miles away from each other by the time they hit the atmosphere.
After the heat of entry wore off the cones came apart and revealed the SC-130-Z33. This was was a heavily modified version of the old C-130, new materials and much larger than even the C-130-J30. Of course this one was being used to invade planets and deliver troops and cargo from space.
Within an hour the two aircraft were flying in loose formation, all of their sensors scanning the ground and air around them for a hundred miles. In less than two hours they were orbiting the science outpost, or what was left of it.
They detected no threats. Soon they were setting down vertically with small gun pods active just in case. They kicked up a lot of dust and scared away small animals with their noise but still there was nothing out of place.
Of course people from the outpost usually greeted them but there was nobody doing that now.
The rear doors on the two craft opened at the same time and a dozen soldiers from each fanned out and laid on the ground with their weapons at the ready. There was nothing there. It was a necessary precaution and one that was practiced often.
Soon fifty soldiers from each craft were marching to the outpost and walked all the way around it. They soon ringed the entire outpost as the other soldiers came and began to inspect the place in gruesome details.
All base personnel was accounted for among the littered corpses, identified because their heads were intact. Nothing else was, their bodies had been pulled apart and consumed by animals larger than earth wolves. The remains were to be catalogued and the incident had to be dissected. The brass wanted to know what happened, in horrific detail.
If the brass wanted to know then the politicians wanted to know.
Thats why they brought their own medical and forensic guys, they didn't want any civilians on the planet, not right now. Even with the high-tech tools they brought with them this was going to take all day. It didn't take long before an unmanned vehicle had been launched to keep a vigil from the air.
By all accounts this world had been deemed safe for scientific study. Expeditions had been sent through all of the continents, outposts were established, labs and such were set up. Nobody ever contemplated this. This looked like someone set loose an army of veloceraptors upon the scientists and engineers and doctors who had lived and worked here.
The conclusions were starting to come in, security footage and motion-activated video were found. It was not good. They were attacked alright but not by animals, those came later for free meals. No these people were attacked and killed by ... hobbits?
The reports were sent to the ship, the admiral was not pleased. He thought they might be trying to play a game. He asked if there was any evidence the smurfs were involved? Then he saw the video with his own eyes. He suddenly looked very tired.
Find them, he ordered.
So another UAV was launched and the two of them searched hundreds of square miles until an operator noticed what could have been dens of a rabbit colony. The size was wrong, these were "hobbit holes" and the others concurred. The shire had been found.
The soldiers loaded aboard the two Hercules SC-130 Z-33 aircraft and launched nearly vertically with rocket assist. They travelled straight to the "shire" and landed nearby. The noise would have carried for miles as two hundred soldiers armed with the newest and best slag rifles exited the aircraft after putting on the heaviest armored they had carried down.
They waited for an hour before the first of the "hobbits" came out of their holes. They were very curious and they were very cautious of these strangers in their midst. The creatures congregated at the center of their "shire" or warren. They seemed to be discussing their situation.
The commanders on the ground watched with interest but everyone tensed when the larger ones with the weapons began to appear on the surface. One of them seemed to be forming up his troops, snipers were soon trained on that one.
Then another hobbit seemed to argue with that one but soon others took sides. There must have been argument back and forth for several minutes before the objector walked away upset.
The unarmed creatures began to scurry back to their burrows in haste and the human commanders gave the alert signal. That is the moment that the man in charge on the ground began to hear small explosions.
Behind them, a quarter of a mile or so, the SC-130's were being rocked with small explosions. The gun pods on the planes were firing away at the creatures that surrounded it. Something that looked like a giant slingshot was being used to catapult some type of explosive at the planes.
Some of the soldiers opened fire and the commander ordered the armed arial vehicles to attack those attackers.
At that same time these "hobbits" began to pop out of the ground all around them and attack. They used clubs and swords and maces, growling and snarling like a mad wolf. The soldiers put up a fight until the arial attacks came.
Winged animals were flying circles high above them, dropping small explosives amongst them. It was a deadly attack and divided their attention in yet another direction. Still they had numbers and firepower and this was doable.
Until hundreds of arrows began to smack into the ground all around them. Several soldiers were downed by the arrows, fired from the center of the shire. AAV's were sent in to dispatch them but one of those machines was damaged in a counter-attack, falling to the ground and exploding.
Soon there were dozens of dead soldiers and they had moved back to a small perimeter around the aircraft. They were firing away and hobbits were falling left and right. An observer would point out that they kept getting back up.
The slag rounds would go right through a hobbit but often they hit nothing, somehow. They would spray slag rounds by the thousands into a crowd of hobbits with no effect. How is that even possible?
The commander on the ground reported to the mother ship that they were surrounded by a thousand of the creatures at least. The battle was not going so well.
Then above them a SC-130 Z-33u came out of nowhere and began firing MEIT missiles into the crowds of hobbits. The creatures scattered and the missiles followed them individually.
The Miniature Enemy Individually Targeted Missiles were another interesting advancement. A missile fired at a crowd would soon target up to two dozen enemies because it was really a bundle of two dozen miniature missiles.
New orders. Get on your craft and get airborne. Once in the air they were told to split up and to help evacuate the remaining 3 outposts from the far reaches of the planet. First they bombed the science outpost to smithereens.
This world had been ordered evacuated, the politicians were panicking at the sight of fighting between humans and little furry creatures. How would this play if the video were ever released? It had been slapped with Most Secret and buried in some safe at Langley.
Soon the three Hercules were firing their rockets, their wings folding back and pushing their way back into orbit. This world would be wiped from the records, it never happened, the evidence would be so secret they'd never see the light of day.
Those heroic soldiers will have died in the line of duty, many given medals for bravery, their families given large checks. They would not be given an explanation other than simple things like "training exercise".
Sounds like a tragedy to cover something like that up.
Cover what up? Nothing like that ever happened.
No title but what about Fury of the Furries?
