I once had an idea for a computer-launched guided mortar...
The column of armored vehicles dashed across the flat desert expanse, the side of the highway littered with burned out vehicles and pockmarks where hiddens bombs had blown.
Up ahead was the city of Al-Fajalla, surrounded by an 11 foot wall and then they'd go between two seven story buildings. The leader of this armored column was cautious after the last battle cost him several vehicles and even more men.
From the back of one of the armored vehicles a small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle was launched. It flew over the wall and scanned for enemies who might be there with an RPG or other ambush. It found nothing, the Commander could see that from the video it sent back.
Just before he was ready to give the go-ahead to the stopped column the UAV sent back pictures of men huddled on one of the rooftops, behind a small wall. They had not just an RPG but a more advanced anti-armor missile as well. He reached out and touched the image of the men on the monitor and then touched a square labeled Auto Motor.
The Mortar computer was given precise distance to the enemy from the UAV and calculated exactly how much force to launch its mortar with. The wind was calculated and the mortar tube adjusted itself. The computer knew that it would need an air-burst directly above the target.
**whoosh!** One large mortar was launched and followed by a second. Explosions directly above the enemy rained down hot shrapnel that tore them apart. The second shredded them further.
