I usually met them for lunch every Thursday, a few of them always sat a table over from us and pretended not to know us. This is how we kept track of each other. We knew we couldn't say much out loud or meet each other too often without raising suspicions. We traded information as most of us also "had lunch" on other days with other people. This is how things were learned, spread by casual contact in pizza, sandwich or coffee shops. We learn that so-and-so has been arrested and we tell the others at out next lunch date who might not know otherwise.
We are the underground, you see?
There are millions of us all over the country. Many of us are being monitored since its not like they care to keep it a secret. We know our neighbors are watching and listening for a slip-up to turn us in to the authorities. Many of us already have family and friends in the camps, we are in no hurry to join them. We have all heard the stories, I wince when I think about it. Thank God I'm not female, its so much worse for them. It's scarier for those with kids, they know their kids will tell their teachers about everything they might say that is negative against the government.
They can not even sleep peacefully in their own beds without the worry they might talk in their sleep. That someone might tell. That there might be a knock on the door in the night or even a door that gets broken in by their goons.
We always go but we never really participate in the community meetings. Of course we know they're nothing more than local enforcers for the authorities, keeping out their eyes and ears for any sign of disloyalty. We go because not going would raise suspicions. We take our recycling to the community center, we buy the pamphlets and books that they sell and we display them on our shelves next to the image of the leader. Members of the Underground must be above suspicion as much as possible. Members of the Underground must stay invisible until the time came to not be invisible.
We are the Underground, you see?
When we stand in line for an hour to buy a loaf of bread with our money and ration card, we know better than to complain. That man is a member of the Party, the woman by the door is an agent of the Secretariat. There is a man somewhere nearby who works for the Interior Security Agency and there is always a member of the Nation-Corps somewhere nearby, a paid bully, all of them paid to oppress. They always get the freshest foods, they always get extra rolls of toilet paper for their loyalty to the regime was unquestionable. We all knew we could say nothing when told there was no more coffee but we can see several cans behind the clerk. Those were reserved. For the most loyal among us. We do not question "equality for all" for we know it is a lie. We simply bide our time and wait.
We are the Underground, you see.

I was wondering if the new character might have rescued Angel after she ran out on Debra's group. That would tie them together, but I think maybe he is in the big city, he has not been declared an "Undesirable", he is just trying not to be noticed at this point.

Hmm not a bad idea. Maybe he could have rescued Angel and did not get caught due to blind luck and is now trying his best to look like an obedient citizen?

Mom and dad were always fighting about something. Usually it was money or something we needed and couldn't afford. Dad had always grumbled about a business he use to own and lost because of "politicians" and he always used words I am not allowed to use when he talked about it. Politicians were the root of all evil was something I had heard umpteen times. I leanred "Umpteen times" from mom.
About a year ago Dad died in a car accident. Mom didn't let me go to the funeral, she said thats because it was a "paupers" burial since we didn't have any money.
Things got real bad for a while after that. We could hardly afford to eat sometimes, Mom gave up the house and we moved into a little apartment. The neighborhood was pretty scary, especially after dark. The gangs took over and they were vicious to anyone and everyone it seemed. It was not uncommon for them to go through the building banging on doors and taunting people to come out. When that happened me and Mom would hide in the bathroom. One time she told me that "white people" were their main targets. That's me, very white.
A few months ago Mom went into a real depression and said she was finally "giving up". She said I was being enrolled in a special school and she was moving back to her parents farm in another state, Nebraska I think. She said the school was free, I would live there and be trained and everything. I guess I am a bit of a burden, times are hard and a kid doesn't put food on the table or pay the electric bill.
Instead of walking to the normal bus stop with the other kids I was picked up by a large silver bus for "training camp", the blue words on the side said "Civilian Security Force - Youth Brigade".

Yes I think that would be a good addition to the story. It would be a good way to explore how the government indoctrinates.
Another thing to add or mention in the story would be hired thugs, like the SEIU guys who attacked the conservative recently.

Yes, that would be a good idea. Thanks for reminding me. I think the second character will be running into those guys now and again.

Three characters too many? Not at all. Vigilance has 3 main characters (Miya, Thomas and the main villain: Yusef), plus 5 more supporting characters.

MOMS POINT OF VIEW===== He was the perfect child, slept through the night the day I brought him home. We called him Buzzy as he was like a honey bee checking everything out before he could even sit up straight. By the time he was 6 he was just like the rotten neighbors kids, climbing on the roofs, up trees and somehow got himself a sling shot. That Xmas he gave me a wrap made from 32 squirrel tails. Next year his grandfather bought him a small cross bow with darts. I got rabbit fur slippers that year for Xmas. At the tender age of 8 his dad got him a 22 small rifle. they spent hours on the range together blasting balloons set at various distances apart. Just because I am his mother does not mean I see him as all good. True he spent hours with every book he could find on slight of hand, His hero's were the Chris Angles of the world. He got good in such a short time. Bad part was he was at this age getting detention for speaking back to his teachers. He received AA++ in all subjects except some new class that taught Government Ideals. He was outraged when the sheriff came to the house to take all weapons, even his cross bow. he hid the sling shot. At 10 years of age he knew his Dad was in trouble with the government for getting a lawyer and suing everyone but the POPE. Small town here, the day his father died was witnessed by 8-9 of my neighbors. They saw one of them Government Jeeps pull broad side to him and force him off the road into a ravine. I was not in any shape to go to a funeral or bury my husband, this soon, I could have waited for the internment for a few months but it never occurred to me. My son stayed home to be with me and people still talk about what a rotten kid I had that would not bury their own father. Wasn't but a few months that a wonderful man from the Government came to court Me Few boys my age at 10 look at their Mom as a sexual object, but this man made me feel brand new. We my son and I had round after round of arguments and yelling times over that man being in my and his Dads house. 11 th. birthday was a shocker to him my presents were all uniforms and boots. I then told him how difficult it was to feed us both, pay taxes etc. What a bunch of Hooey. I lied and told him he I was going to live with family that were blood to me,, He is safe feed 3 good meals a day, good exercise and companionship. Me, I married the Government man--Can't give names--but he is now in the lead for Senator for our State. I have heard rumbling about government, silly rumors, if I believe them my own son will come to kill me-----Nonsense. |
