"The ruins are actually quite widespread. It's a pretty big place" Gax told her. "How will you find where Sara went to?"
She had no clue. "If I look as much like Sara as some of you said, then we will come across someone who knew her sooner or later"
Gax shook his head. "That is not a plan"
They had reached the edge of the ruins. Destroyed buildings and heaps of rubble lay strewn past the horizon. She looked down at the thinly sandaled foot of Gax. "I guess this is where you go back".
Gax turned toward his guards and indicated one of the men who were carrying the food bundles and said "Give me the small pack". He handed this to Tara and she slung it over a shoulder.
"Thank you Gax"
Then he turned to his guards again and said "Go back to the village and tell Master Dellums I will stay with Tara until she has reached her destination"
They nodded and turned to leave.
"You don't have to do this" she told the young man "I think I can find it on my own. Besides the rocks and rubble will cut your feet".
"Maybe" he said and shrugged.
Tara dropped the small bundle and took off the uniform jacket, she didn't mind wearing the sleeveless tee shirt underneath "This is made of a silver thread mesh. Thats why it only needs to be rinsed with water to clean. You can cut it with your knife and wrap it around your feet."
After he did this they set out across the rubble, it was a slow process at first because they were loose enough to cause constant slip and falls. She found it was better to walk slightly faster than normal.
They went down into a wide depression, like a valley. It was still strewn with rubble but there were people down there.
They found a woman washing cloth at a pipe slowing spewing water. The woman became excited when she saw Tara and came to her. The woman almost crawled, both of her feet were clubbed.
"You have returned! We all wondered when you would come back" she said. The yelling attracted others who also seemed to recognize her.
"You are very popular" Gax joked.
"I am not Sara" she told them after their voices died down, "I have come to find out what happened to her"
"She said someone else would come when she died" someone said.
"I thought she was taken by that slaver" someone else said "I didn't know she really died".
The old woman spoke again "We kept everything like Sara told us, the weapons are in the bunker".
Tara looked at Gax and then back to the woman "Weapons?"
"After Sara vanished we were to hide them in the bunker to keep them safe until someone else arrived... you came to take charge"
"Just like Sara told us. She said more of us would be killed if we tried to fight back without her." the woman said "So now we are meek and simple folk when the slavers come and we offer them nobody they want"
A strong male voice spoke up from behind Tara and Gax "Because there is nobody they want. They remember Sara like we do and they want more like her".
Tara turned around to see a large silver haired man.
"You look so much like Sara its scary" the man said "I'm Rik. I'm in charge of the defense council. Meaning hiding the weapons until you came. She went from us about three months ago"
Gax spoke up "Greetings, I come from Restoration village. I have accompanied Tara on the last part of her journey. Master Dellum sends his good wishes".
"Sara told us she was the third. I didn't understand what that meant but does this mean that you are the fourth?" Rik asked.
"It does"
"Can you tell us what it means?"
She smiled "I do not know myself. I only know that I was to come here and find what happened to Sara."
Rik led her to a hut amidst a burgeoning village of huts. Most of them used rubble to build their walls. The roofs were made of various materials.
"We haven't touched it since she went" Rik said.
"Three months?" Tara asked looking around the hut. There was a rudimentry bed, a sheet and a stuffed pillow. There was a table and a plastic chair. "What did she use that for?"
"She ate some of her meals in here when she needed privacy but she used to have a computer..."
"Where is it?" Tara asked, remembering the disc she carried.
"In the bunker with the weapons. You really should order us to set up the weapons so we can defend our village" Rik said "The slavers could come back at any minute. I saw lights in the skies last night, something was up there".
"Take me to the bunker" she told him.
