I have noted that in our Age, when most people's idea of philosophy is a parrot-like recitation of the latest pop lyrics or worse, political mantra, Science Fiction and Fantasy stories often produce gems of Insight and Truth.
Or maybe I'm not getting enough sleep.
I remember in college, having long discussions of the nature of the Vulcan IDIC, and the meanings of responsibility and sacrifice embodied by Frodo. This was at a time when the "normals" were thinking themselves profound by stating that "war is bad."
A few months ago I heard a few lines in an episode of Dr. Who that I thought really clever and showing an appreciation of an aspect of Human Nature.
As I thought about it a short time later I wondered if anyone else had been struck by the remarks. Sure enough, a web search revealed that someone was now selling coffee cups inscribed with , "Sad: it's happy for deep people."
The phrase is a condensation of a dialog in which a bright young woman was her trying to explain her complex feelings about taking photos of old things, such as once grand houses falling into ruin to a more prosaic friend, because "it makes me sad."
So, who else has similar Pearls of Wisdom from imaginative fiction to share? If I'm the only one I shall be sad. But happy in an odd way, of course.

Yes, I agree. The problem is all those stupid DUmmies who will use this as a reason to call themselves deep. Heh.
