2011- Global banking tax established
2016- General agreement on world currency
2017- Global Currency takes off, for 'international exchange'
2020- Global depression
2022- General agreement on a World government
2024- The Great Fall becomes apparent to everyone
In the years that follow technological breakthroughs allowed humans to travel to other star systems, but first they sent probes. These probes would establish how much like Earth another world was.
The problems of germs and viruses made it likely that anyone traveling to one of these worlds could never come back to Earth. Then there was the cost. The fact is that everyone knew that the ability to travel the stars might last less than a couple of decades because Earth civilization was collapsing.
The United Nations launched colony ships to ten worlds, each carrying thousands of "interstellar refugees" as people called them. Nobody really expected those colonies to succeed.
There were several private operations to get to other habitable worlds but once launched they were never heard from again.
Then there was Colony Corp. Three thousand families of nearly twenty thousand persons total. They sold all their earthly posessions for tools, equipment, seed and the basics of starting as pioneers. General agreement had already been concluded when the ship was constructed.
After purchasing the necessary propulsion systems, the supplier had gone out of business. Colony Corp purchased some of its knowledge and equipment.
The economy of Earth was collapsing, civil wars and revolutions were happening everywhere. There was even fighting between groups and factions in the United States, counties declaring independence. Brutal government measures were being used to put down the insurrections.
Finally the Homeward was complete. Thousands of families escaped into space and would live in very small pods attached to the ship for the duration of the voyage. There were some common areas they could visit when it was their turn though.
Even with the new technologies of the "warp hops" it took months to arrive. The chosen continent was divided, half of it would be assigned. Each family was assigned a 500 square miles section of land, these were carefully assigned with a nod towards specialties and fields of education.
Two small areas would become cities, each family getting small parcels of land therein. A few acres. Roads would be built connecting the farms to the cities and from one city to the other, over a thousand miles away.
The planet was known as Solaris and each family owned a share of it. This was the general contract, annual shareholder meetings were to be done, a representative from each family would be seated. It would take place just after the fall harvest period.
An unmanned vessel carrying equipment of all kinds had arrived before them and was still waiting when they arrived. It was hoped that they had everything they really needed to survive. Hopes were high but everyone knew the chances against a real success were pretty high.
Solaris soon had its own constellation of communication and weather satellites that also acted as a GPS system. This would even provide them a rudimentry internet with every family assigned 75mb of server space. These sites would have no anonymity, they would likely be used for business transaction.
