Avatar is proof that movies, like video games, can be sold on graphics alone.
As pretty much everyone knows, the plot is done to death, but there is more.
The conflict between humans and Navi is silly, and not for the reason most people think it is. It is silly because all humans (except for the main character and a few scientists) are bad and all Navi are good. In real life, socio-political factions are never so unanimous. In countries occupied by the National Socialists, there were resistors, collaborators, opportunists, and people who did not want a part in any of the conflict. Even the Nazis had officers who wanted to kill Hitler for a variety of (mostly not altruistic) reasons.
Realistically, this would have extended to Pandora. Some Navi would have been astounded by the human technology, and the technology would have been used to 'buy' allies. Other Navi would have collaborated with the humans for their own reasons (most likely in an 'enemy of my enemy is my friend' way to destroy enemy tribes) while others still would have use the conflict to loot, profit, or do other things.
Humans too should have been more divided.
On top of that, the Chinese-style forced eviction would have been unnecessary! The humans could have traded technology in exchange for the ore. The humans could also have used shaft mining instead of strip mining to get the ore without disturbing the Navi. Pandora's biology was worth far more than the rock (this little fact is mentioned in the film by one of the characters!) and even that could have been obtained by taking samples and then using genetic technology to reproduce it.
Also, why are there no diseases? If you go out into the jungle in real life, you better hope you are vaccinated against Malaria and other diseases and have anti-venom and other medicines with you.
Of course, if the movie was realistic, it would not have been possible to get its leftist message across to the audience.
