The high grass rustled, it had been a dry month. Then something shot through the space between two trees, catching Grimak off guard. He regained his composure quickly, tightened his grip on the spear he carried and took off after his prey.
He quickly came upon the bank of a stream, a tributary of the mighty Nonga probably. Not far away he saw the small animal lying on its side just inches from the water on a bed of pebbles.
Grimak knealed next to his kill, rather a small animal, but it only need feed two. He placed his hand on its body and closed his eyes. Yes, the life force had gone from its little furry body, but its blood was still warm.
'Thank you for my meal' he thought towards whatever spirit animals left behind. He raised his hand, he had cupped it and drank a swallow of the warm blood of a once lively creature. This was to show you honored that which you killed, it was not for sport that creatures die for us, he told himself.
Grimak entered his camp and saw his son Rinkat sitting by a roaring fire, which had been cold and unlit this morning. Now the Havalan could be cooked instead of eaten raw.
"Not one fish would enter my net father" The boy told him playfully. "Did that poor thing consent to letting us eat it?"
Grimak shook his head "I don't like those jokes, its ill-fitting for the future ruler of this world. You have much to learn before I can die and let you make a mess of it"
"I take it very seriously father, I would not have it any other way"
Grimak looked up at the stars and the double moon, "Our people came here centuries ago aboard massive craft. Today things are so different that they might never be repaired, you will have a lot to bear on those shoulders, my son, future Protector!"
"Yes father. I shall try to be a good ruler"
