someone needs to build the thing so we can escape from Earth before it all collapses

I do not know if you are talking about the Stargate TV series (which I have never seen more than a few episodes of) or not, but I will say that it is tough to create a traversible wormhole. Something with negative mass or energy, which is only theoretical as is, will be needed to hold it open so that it does not collapse when matter is sent through it. The Casimir Effect is theorized to be one source of negative energy. So, this gate would be a pair of huge circular plates, probably several miles in diameter or more, separated by a few nanometers or less apart. Maybe it is built at one of Earth's Langaragian points for ships to traverse through to another world. Maybe its wormhole connects to another gate that was placed at the end hundreds or thousands of years ago to serve as a corridor between earth and that world. Another possibility is a Morris-Thorne wormhole, which is held open by a sphere of what is only known as 'Exotic Matter.'

That would be an interesting thing to try. Of course we have no idea how to even attempt something like that yet.
