"They went to war over what?"
"The Spratley Islands. Nobody actually lives on them but there were a few small garrisons. Malaysia, Taiwan, Philippines, Brunei, Vietnam and China all claim some of the islands"
"But why?"
"Undersea resources, oil and stuff"
"Sounds ridiculous"
"It didn't last very long, at first. All the sides agreed to a halt and brought in the Japanese and Koreans to patrol the waters around those 750 atolls and islands."
"At first?"
"They discovered rare earth minerals were more abundant there than in China, which almost had a monopoly on the world market up to that time. So the Chinese went into a full scale war"
"They bombed the Spratleys?"
"No, they nuked Taiwan, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia, Philippines and this upset the guarantors that tried to intervene and the Chinese then nuked Korea and Japan."
"Oh My Gawd, and what happened?!"
"The Russians and Americans evacuated as much of the affected areas as they could but it was hardly enough. Finally it was decided to bring as many of the survivors to the colony world Atlantis. Which was quickly renamed Asia"
"That is insane. How many were brought to the new world?"
"18 million from China, 7 million Filipino's, 4 million from Taiwan, half million Malaysians, same from Vietnam, nobody in Brunei survived. They also sent 5 million Japanese and 6 million Koreans"
"That's a lot for a colony, a massive exodus"
"Yep, they had quite a problem growing enough food to feed themselves but that gave them peace for the first few years. After that they were to form a government and elect leaders of a United Asia."
"Did it go well?"
"The Chinese section declared themselves independent and formed their own government. Then the others followed suit and now we have 7 different countries on Asia"
"That could cause problems"
"They have all pretty much claimed every piece of unsettled land although expansion of any of them is minimal at present. They don't have very advanced military technologies, so far. The distance between worlds is vast and smuggling weapons would take many years so its hardly worth it, by the time you get back your wife has remarried and the gold or whatever you were paid is now worth squat"
"They do trade amongst themselves don't they?"
"To some extent. The Koreans don't allow the importation of rice at prices lower than domestic standard, imports-if needed- are taxed to make them about the same price. All of them have their differences in culture and stuff"
"Right, such as the Japanese loving anime"
"Not in the New Nippon they don't, they are realists. Amazing how adaptable they can be in some ways. Look at how fast they accepted democracy and dumped their all-powerful Imperial system after the second world war"
"Interesting, but not many colonies have multiple nations or would that be 'not many colonies are multiple nations'?"
"Whatever. That is true though. After the horrible failure of Tierra Delta you'd think they would have learned a lesson"
"Don't remind me. I have cousins who were sent there from India, only one of whom survived the first year"
"Exactly, imagine setting up a world with 100 nations ruled by a UN-type government. It was bound to fail. It was a top-down system and inefficient as anything, they nearly starved the lot of them. Everything collapsing within a matter of months"
"So where do you think New Asia is going from here?"
"Well this news is at least a year old so who knows? It can't be as bad as Tierra Delta, that is for sure"
"We can hope. I don't see them setting up a unified government because they won't even agree on what official language it should use"
