I know this is a fiction forum, but the events are both alarming and a source of inspiration for near-future fiction. www.todayszaman.com/news-252129-turkish-chief-of-general-staff-top-commanders-resign-amid-controversy.htmlThe military has been the only reason Turkey has not had an islamofascist government. If the country is seized by islamofascists, the country would become the most powerful Sharia-loving nation on the planet. The only country in the region that could challenge Turkey would be Israel. Turkey has been getting closer to Iran and Iran is close to Syria, and Egypt is now ruled by the Muslim Brotherhood. It is the kind of thing that could see the rebirth of the Ottoman Empire.

I saw this story at FR and I reposted it at goldtalk.com because I understood the ramifications of this very quickly. We are either seeing the birth of the next insane Islamic Republic, a military coup or an all-out civil war.

It depends on the lower levels of the Turkish military. Without those chiefs of staff are simply division leaders though, and it is entirely possible they will fight amongst themselves (or battles between Islamofascist and secular elements within the military), which will play right into the hands of Erdogran.
Adolf Hitler encouraged generals of the Wehrmacht and SS to plot against each other because several of them wanted to overthrow Hitler.

And liberals want the US to be like 3rd world countries?? I don't think I'd like living in a country where there are coups every other year. ( there were attempted coups in the Philippines in 2006 and 2007?) The Philippines not only has the Muslims dominating the politics of Mindanao but they have an armed commie insurgency too (New Peoples Army).
I don't even think the Philippines has a fighter jet (maybe a few mothballed F-5's).
Could be worse, could be Uganda- a dirt poor country that spends $740million on 6 Russian fighters while their annual military budget is supposed to be $95 million. Oh and they take 13 year olds to be soldiers too, what a messed up country!
Hey leftists, no, I don't want to make America like that

Unfortunately I think we could very well be headed that way. The Republicans caved AGAIN just moments before this post. Boehner's new bill simply saves 100 billion a year. 100 billion is how much the government borrows each month.

Actually this whole debt thing is more political sleight of hand than anything else. Watch the other hand. news.cnet.com/8301-31921_3-20084939-281/house-panel-approves-broadened-isp-snooping-bill/Computer memory has gotten so cheap and the capacity has gotten so high that at some point everything we do in our entire lives will be recorded and stored on hard drives. Every financial transaction, every tax, every program watched, every game played, every email sent.

The GOP plan doesn't "save" anything. Because of baseline budgeting a $1 trillion "cut" in a decade is actually an $8.5 trillion increase in spending.
How draconian. lol.
And both parties have a vested interest in pretending this is actually a "cut" too.
