With Space X bringing the cost of space travel down, we might see space station nations within 30 years. Much more difficult to undermine.
But you do bring up a good point. A nation state's navy could simply torpedo an artificial island if taxing and regulating fails.

Yes and the city could just grow and grow without limit at a LaGrange point, without any worry about orbital decay.

That could be cool. It would probably be expensive but it'd be cooler to mention at cocktail parties than the summer house in the Hamptons or the Yacht. lol

If I had one of these modules as a home, would rather have a transparent inflatable module so I could see the stars everywhere around me. Privacy would be provided by the rigid core of the structure.
