The Society (sort of a backgrounder)
The secret society began with the development of technology that gave the insiders new lives, new bodies when the old ones wore out. The secret society owned a chain of private schools, orphanage, adoption agencies, hospitals and many other things that were used to create backgrounds for their future selves, which usually started off as young teenagers.
The hospitals allowed them to create birth certificates that were real and registered in the county and state computer records. Then they had shot records and medical records made, their private schools would have records and files for their new identities. Their adoptive parents were always members of the society and gave them all the freedom and leeway they wanted.
Their wills left their estates or fortunes to their future selves although a portion was always reinvested into the society. The society later owned islands, aircraft and yachts for the use of their membership as well as ski lodges and many other things for their interests. The Society owned buildings in several major cities with offices as well as special rooms for members to lodge in while traveling and access to gyms, libraries and other facilities.
After 125 years the society had fewer than 1,000 members. When a member died they were replaced by a carefully selected inductee, and sometimes their children were brought into the group as well. In 125 years about 102 of the original members had been killed in the line of living.
All 1,000 members had input when they held a formal meeting of their assembly called the Say. The Say was usually held in the meeting hall of the Society headquarters. At Say’s the Speaker for the Past recited the history of the Society and then the names of those who had died since the last meeting. Then the Presiding Officer announced the official reason(s) for the Call to Say and laid out some of the options for them to consider.
After 155 years of their existence the Society owned a large Caribbean island that became the main “away” point for their members. It officially belonged to a country that gave them wide freedom to administer their own services and rules. Officially it became the largest private resort on Earth but some of the members literally spent every other or every third lifetime at the resort.
10% of their earnings were given to the Society and 10% of their personal wealth was given to the society on their “transfer” to new lives. They were all encouraged to get into high paying careers but many of them spent every second or third lifetime being “retired” or “rich and lazy”.
After 166 years they held Say and they agreed to expand their numbers from the 1,120 it had grown to up to 1,400 by encouraging female members to have babies. These children would be raised as Society members and have very little contact with the non-Society world.
Officially their Society was supposed to have members not only get into wealth-building careers but to infiltrate the highest positions of power in several countries so as to guide Earth into a more peaceful and prosperous future. That goal was mostly a non-starter until after 175 years when the world was a mess and they felt little choice but to take action. Soon they would discover they weren’t the only secret society who had designs on world power, but that others had downright evil intentions.
