Lately I have had whole chunks of text disappearing and I have been having to increasingly copy from my CD backup to recover. Yet I cannot find any information on this problem elsewhere.
Has anyone else here had this problem?

The Word program kept asking for a registration number, we don't have a disk. So I downloaded OpenOffice, I use that now. When I had an XP machine I used to love Wordpad.
You don't think its a virus do you? Maybe its a RAM problem, any other program having trouble? Games? watching videos online?

My computer is clean of viruses (I scanned a few nights ago and do not do much web browsing or emailing) and I have a gig of RAM, unless WordPad has a problem with nearly 90,000 word documents and that amount of memory. No other software I use has any problems.

I guess I will try Open Office and see if that fixes it.

Open Office is a bit slower to open, but otherwise seems to be OK. It lets me save in doc or pdf if I want to.
Maybe saving stories as PDF would be a good idea? I could email them to my web based mail and have them if I ever lose this compy.

Yes that would probably be a good idea. Something I should do in case I lose my backup CD and this computer malfunctions or something. I do prefer saving to CD since it is a non-magnetic form of storage in case there is a particularly strong solar storm or whatever else can zot magnetic based memory. But its a good idea nonetheless.

Open Office seems to work, though it is a bit slow to open like you said and crashes if I try to save in rtf. But in ODT format it seems to work fine.

Hello. I'm new, just joined today. I wrote a 334-page (conservative) novel using Wordpad and Open Office (rich text format).
I love Wordpad during the early stages where you're just letting the words flow. It's simple, doesn't get in the way. I used Open Office when the first draft was pretty much finished, so I could chapterize.
Finally, I did the typesetting in an older version of QuarkXpress. Typesetting is a whole lot like work...
BTW, my name is Connie Chastain. I'm a political and cultural conservative, and I'm appalled by the lack of fiction for us...although I think the enormous growth of POD and self-publishing will change that.

Welcome, Connie! I am appalled by the lack of conservative fiction too. I have been at work on a conservative leaning novel of my own and currently at 171 pages (the first five chapters of Vigilance have been posted to the Storyboard). Have you got your novel into print? I am hooked on Open Office now. I will have to look into this QuarkExpress program for when my manuscript is done.

I looked and searched hard for a forum devoted to us conservatives who liked to write fiction and I could not find one anywhere online. Thats why I started Liberty Fiction. I tend to narrate and tend to not finish my stories. This board was supposed to help me with that. I also have 2 'Ongoing stories' that I need to work on.

Ha. I got MS Office fixed. I also found out that this compy has buried deep within it MS Works.
So now I have Wordpad, MS Works, MS Office and Open Office.
That should just about do it.

That's good. I use WordPad for small stuff and Open Office for big stuff (like Vigilance). I do not have MS Office though.
